Portugal will face group leaders Russia in a UEFA Group F match for 2014 world cup qualification at Lisbon on 7th June. Portugal is currently at third place with 11 points, same as Israel who currently holds the playoff spot on goal difference. Russia has won all its four group matches without conceding a goal and they have played two games lesser than their opponent has. Portugal needs a win against Russia to keep hopes of an automatic spot. Portugal has lost its reverse fixture against Russia by a solitary goal last year. Portugal won the match against Azerbaijan goals by 2-0 and drew against Israel 3-3 in their previous world cup qualifiers.
Capello has made Russia a competent outfit after taking charge and their win against Portugal shows their mettle. Russia has drawn its last two friendly matches against Brazil and USA. Akinfeev is the backbone of the Russian defence at the goal along with Ignashevich, Berezutskiy, and Kombarov. Captain Denisov, Zhirkov, and Dzagoev are the key Russian midfielders. Kerzhakov is the main goal threat for Russia in a 4-5-1 formation.
Portugal coach Bento will be looking at former world player Cristiano Ronaldo to fire them towards victory while playing in a 4-3-3 formation. Nani will be making a return to the team. With the pace of Ronaldo and Nani in the wings, Portugal can be dangerous in counter attacks. With the likes of Meireless, Veloso, and Moutinho in the midfield, Portugal will be looking to absorb Russian attack and release the Ronaldo and co to attack. In the absence of Real Madrid defender Pepe, Bruno Alves and Fabio Coentrao have to play major role in defence.
Portugal needs to find its goal scoring touch to qualify from this tough group. Russia will start as favorites to win the match with its impeccable defence and counter attacking. However, with Ronaldo upfront, Portugal is a force to reckon with in this must win game for them.
